"I'm a typeface designer for a livin."
James Edmondson was born in San Luis Obispo, California between LA and SF. He currently lives with his wife and daughter in Oakland, CA. The youngest of six boys developed an interest in calligraphy in his teenage years which became his "gateway drug into type design."
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?
"Just being a good papa."
His creative process is simple:
"Ideate, sketch, repeat, complete."
What do you do when you get blocked?
"Getting blocked is bullshit. I get lazy, but it’s never truly a block."
The type designer works with modern funk band Vulfpeck to design them their own set of fonts.
How did you get involved with the Vulfpeck project? (HUGE FAN) :)
"Very coincidental. I made a time-lapse video of working on some fonts, and set it to the song “Welcome to Vulf Records” illegally, without permission. Jack, the leader of Vulf saw it, and then got in touch with me to design some fonts for the band. By the time he hit me up, I was a huge superfan as well. It was completely surreal that my favorite band wanted to commission me for some work. The project snowballed into a full family, and we've collaborated on a bunch of other projects since then. It's all been a dream!"
Advice for new designers
"Get really good, and be really nice."
How is COVID-19 affecting you and your work?
"Well, my wife has lost her job, and in one month she and our baby won't have health insurance. It's all good, we'll figure it out, but these are crazy times.
I feel a little odd continuing to market fonts right now. It’s obviously not the most important thing. But I don't have much of a choice. The wheels of capitalism must keep turning!"
